DESCRIPTION

The Atkins Nutritional Approach, popularly known as the Atkins Diet or just Atkins, is a well-known low-carbohydrate diet. It was adapted by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1960s from a diet he read in the Journal of the American Medical Association and utilized to resolve his own overweight condition following medical school and graduate medical training. He later popularized the Atkins diet in a series of books, starting with Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution in 1998. In his revised book, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Atkins updated some of his ideas, but remained faithful to the original concepts.

The 5 Factor Diet The 5-Factor Diet was originally created for celebrities. Harley was challenged to create brief (yet incredibly effective) workouts for actors, while training them during their short breaks on movie sets. In addition, he needed to create healthy meals in a matter of minutes (literally), using simple ingredients (the fewer the better) that could fit in the mini fridge on a set. Oh, and did we mention that he was relying on a blender and toaster oven for the mixing, blending, and cooking? Harley's clients were eating five times a day, cutting the length of their workouts, and transforming their bodies! As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention.

The Mediterranean Diet The Mediterranean diet incorporates the basics of healthy eating, plus a splash of flavorful olive oil and perhaps a glass of good red wine, among other components characterizing the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
NutriSystem, Inc. NutriSystem Nourish Diet plan is a "send you the food" diet plan. The NutriSystem Diet is based on the Glycemic Index of Carbohydrates. Combined exercise, and frequent smaller portioned meals, the glycemic index diet is supposed to reduce hunger (due to a constant blood glucose). There is some support for weight loss and health benefits of low glycemic-index diets in controlled scientific studies, however, some other studies have suggested there is no long-term benefit to these diets.
The Sonoma Diet was developed by Connie Guttersen and is a derivation of the Mediterranean diet. The diet plan consists managing portion sizes and eating approved foods centered around 10 items known as the "power foods".

Similar to the Atkins Diet, Zone diet and South Beach Diet, the Sonoma Diet has three distinct stages known as waves. The first phase which lasts 10 days is the most restrictive phase with the smallest number of foods allowed with the smallest portion sizes. During this stage sugar intake is greatly reduced. During the next wave a wider variety of foods are allowed and weight loss slows to a more gradual pace. Wave two continues until the target weight is reached. Wave three is known as the maintenance stage with a wider range of foods being allowed including the occasional dessert.

This diet is not classified as a low-carbohydrate diet or low sugar diet. People following the diet are allowed to eat whole grains, breads and cereals during all three stages of the diet. The plan does recommend avoiding white flour, saturated fats, and recipes with additional sugar. One of the tools used to teach portion management is plate size. For breakfast the diet recommends using an 18 cm (7 inch) plate and for lunch and dinner a 9-inch plate is recommended.

The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss The South Beach diet is a diet plan started by Miami, Florida, area cardiologist Arthur Agatston which emphasizes the consumption of "good carbohydrates" and "good fats". Dr. Agatston developed this diet for his cardiac patients based upon his study of scientific dieting research. The diet first appeared in a book of the same name published by Rodale Press.

Dr. Agatston believes that excess consumption of so-called "bad carbohydrates", such as the rapidly-absorbed carbohydrates found in foods with a high glycemic index, creates an insulin resistance syndrome—an impairment of the hormone insulin's ability to properly process fat or sugar. In addition, he believes along with many physicians that excess consumption of "bad fats", such as saturated fat and trans fat, contributes to an increase in cardiovascular disease. To prevent these two conditions, Agatston's diet minimizes consumption of bad fats and bad carbohydrates and encourages increased consumption of good fats and good carbohydrates.

The diet has three phases. In all phases of the diet, Dr. Agatston recommends minimizing consumption of bad fats.

Weight Watchers is one of the best diet plans.  There aren't any gimmicks or requirements that you buy their products.  Its a simple plan that teaches the user how to eat healthy, by showing the correct portions of food.  Weight Watchers utilizes two plans.  One is a points-based system where all foods are allocated a certain number of points.  You are told how many points you must eat per day, based on your age, height, weight and activity level.  The second method is by using a list of healthy and natural foods.  If the food is on this list, you can eat until you are satisfied.  This doesn't mean eat as much as you want.  It teaches you to recognize when your body has had enough.  You are given a number of points for the week to cover any foods not on this list.  You can go to meetings or do the program online.
The Zone diet is a diet popularized in books by biochemist Barry Sears. It advocates balancing protein and carbohydrate in 3:4 ratios. It is not primarily a weight-loss "diet", though it can be used for that purpose.  Some nutritional experts, including some of Sears' former colleagues, are critical of his conclusions from the scientific evidence, contending that he has distorted or exaggerated the meaning of much of the basic research. They point out that no direct studies to verify his conclusions have been performed. Some experts consider The Zone a fad diet; others think it "not bad."
